35 12x12 Exhibit

I'm happy to announce that I will be part of the 35 12x12 Exhibit at the Frehner Art Gallery in Monroe Wisconsin. This exhibit is sponsored by the Monroe Arts Center and runs from March 4 - March 25.

The exhibit is a collection of pieces from 35 artists who have had exhibits at the Frehner in the past. All exhibits are limted to 12 inches by 12 inches. The invited artists have been encouraged to "think outside the box" and re-examine some of their existing work to fit those parameters. I've been tinkering with an image that I think I will be including. To learn more about the Frehner Gallery and Monroe Arts Center, click here.

Looking at sunrises

Dawn, Yellowstone Lake and the Absaroka Range
One thing I often hear at art shows is comments about the light in some of my images and how I get some of the colors I have in the prints. I'm always reminded of something Jim Brandenburg, one of the great nature photographer's said - "it's the light, it's the light, it's the light."

To get the right light for photographs, it usually means getting up at God-awful hours or staying out after everyone else has packed up for the evening. Sunrises are a particular challenge - the light changes so fast in the morning, one needs to be ready for a quickly changing sky.

This image is an example. It's sunrise over Lake Yellowstone and the Absaroka Range. I was actually on my way to the Midway Geyser Basin (near Old Faithful) to shoot there when I saw this light developing. It lasted, at most, five minutes. Anyone going past this vantage point a few mintues later probably wouldn't have looked twice.

Dances with Bears

A couple of people have asked me about the service I'm using for my Grizzly trek in Katmai National Park in July. Here's the guys...

Remembering summer in Yellowstone

Mystic Falls, Yellowstone National Park
Winter has decided to come back here in southern Wisconsin. The cold got me remembering a great summer photographic trip to Yellowstone. I dug out this image from a beautiful summer hike to Mystic Falls and the Firehole River.

I'm sure it is covered in snow and cold now as well. But we can dream...

Prepping for Alaska photography

I'm in the process of setting up the dream trip for, I think, all nature photographers. I'll be spending about two weeks on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska in July and August.

The prep work for any trip to Alaska is daunting (which has been an effort that has kept me from going to Alaska, even though I've wanted to for years). However, I've gotten past all the rough parts and am now into the fun of planning what to shoot while there.

One planned trip is a day I already think I will never forget - I'll be spending a day in the backcountry of Katmai National Park very upclose and personal with it's grizzly population. I just received confirmation for the flight and guides. Now to get that life insurance all paid up....

New Year - new everything!

As 2011 begins, I've decided to shake things up with my photographic work and business. There are (hopefully) some new photographic business ventures starting later this year, however to start things off, I've made some changes...
  • First, this blog. I'm pretty much a tech geek, but had never really tried blogging. I hope that these ramblings will keep you (and me) engaged.
  • A new business name. I'm moving away from Natural Spaces Photography. I've used that name for several years (since I started in 2002, actually) and it's been a good one. For various reasons, I've decided to go to Dave Miess Photography. Like the usual slips in writing the old year on a check, I'm sure I'll make the occasional lapse and refer to the old name - but hopefully over time it will click.
  • A new web site. I've wanted to move into a more dynamic web site for a while and finally found the tools to do it. The new web site is http://www.davemiess.com/ - take a look and see what you think. It's a work in progress, but it will allow me to sell online as well as add images from the field. And at the same time, it's a heckuva lot easier to maintain!
The Lightbox (my email newsletter) will continue. And I hope the photo gods will remain kind so I can bring you more images.

Here's to good light -
